The walk of Christ – Modeling Servanthood
As we dig down to walk this road with Christ we find an unexpected discovery. The air is different down here, like a different barometric pressure, the atmosphere is totally changed from where we were living a few feet of life higher, where we once were just walking. Jesus, the Son of God, who is leading us to live in the Kingdom of God is generating and permeating an entirely new atmosphere. It is an atmosphere of service. You can‟t escape it except to climb back up to the old place where you previously lived. It is unavoidable.
At first you‟re not sure whether to breath faster or slower, it may be hard to catch your breath, but if you don‟t fight it you soon find that breathing this new atmosphere of service to actually renew your strength. It is a fresher and cleaner air than you can remember breathing before.
Jesus shows us how to breathe on this road, by taking a towel and doing the most menial tasks. He jumps right in to the bottom of the servant roles with an attitude that he was doing the most prestigious job. But it doesn‟t stop here. He says we should do this too, just like he is – attitude and all!?!
But it doesn‟t stop here. It is in our service that we call others to serve, who likewise will call others to serve… We model what Jesus has shown us, not just doing the acts of service, but also calling others to service. Jesus has set a perpetually generating atmosphere of serving others on this road as we walk with Him. This is, indeed, a new and fresh walk, on the road where Christ walks.
Prayer:
Father,
You are turning my world upside down but yet it seems so right. Forgive me when my pride has kept me from receiving your service and also blinded me from serving others. Help me to breathe in this new way of living and begin to pass on this atmosphere of service. Show me the menial places you want me to serve and give me an attitude to enjoy them. May my joy cause others to long to serve others as well. Amen.
Action:
Look for one way you can serve someone that will take them, and you, by surprise that you would actually do it. Let them know that God loves them as you do it.
Meditate:
Matt 20:26-28
―Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
“ask where the good way is,
and walk in it,”
Jer 6:16
